"Hello to all lovers of wine generally and to lovers of Tuck’s Ridge specifically. After all you are the reason we do what we do and obviously should be congratulated for your fine sense of taste and style.
When I last touched base we had just welcomed the beginning of what was to become the 2013 vintage with the swelling of and bursting of the buds. Wow how time flies and my greatest apologises for not having touched base sooner. It is my goal to do so more often this coming year and beyond.
So indeed vintage 2013 has come to pass and it was a vintage that will produce some sensational wines, and many additional grey hairs on my head and more noticeably to head of our wine maker Michael Kyberd. Vintage 2013 might not be the earliest vintage on record but it will go very close to being so, it will however go down as the fastest and most compact vintage of all time. Or at least most of it will, as 2013 was really a tale of two vintages. Approximately 80% of our fruit was harvested in an insanity infused 5 days. We then had some welcome, although slightly problematic rain, that ensured the remainder of the harvest came in over what in the end was a somewhat extended period. This is one of the great predictions of the effects of global climate change coming to pass. All in all from the arrival of the first grape at the winery until the finish of the last pressing barely three weeks have passed.
All in all volumes and fruit quality for the 2013 wines looks sensational and will most likely be one of those rare beasts that has both the accountants and critics eagerly rubbing their hands together.
The aromatic whites show spice and life, the bigger white wines have wonderful acid and depth of flavour and the red wines have colour, intensity and wonderful length. In fact Michael has gone out on a limb early and stated that the 2013 Buckle Pinot Noir might very well be the best we have ever offered.
He is keen but rarely wrong." |
